New Students
Whether you’re new to yoga, hot yoga, or our studio, here are our recommendations for you:
Bring water, a sweat towel, and your mat. (We have extra towels and mats, though, if you need to rent them.) We provide blocks, bolsters, and straps.
Please try to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, in order to get settled on your mat. We generally open our doors 30 minutes before class, and our doors close promptly when class is scheduled to begin.
It’s generally recommended that you practice yoga on an empty stomach. Especially if you’re taking a rigorous heated class (Strong Roots Power or Grow and Flow Vinyasa), we recommend that you don’t eat prior to practice.
Wear clothes that allow you to move. If you’re attending a heated class, we recommend sweat-wicking clothes.
If you’re new to the heat, ask our instructors for recommendations about where to set up your mat. (Some spots can be hotter than others.)
Take child’s pose or another grounding position at any time throughout the practice.
Enjoy yourself! Yoga is a practice, and it can take time to become familiar with the poses. Don’t worry about how you or anyone else looks in a pose, just focus on how you’re feeling in your body.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to register ahead of time?
To secure your spot, it is recommended that you sign up online before arriving; however, it’s not required. Some of our classes do reach maximum occupancy, so registering ahead of time is the best way to make sure you’re in the class or on the waitlist.
What if I have an injury?
Check with your doctor before practicing yoga with an injury. If your doctor gives you the okay, let your instructor know, and they’ll give you suggestions for alternative ways to do each pose.
I’ve never done yoga. Can I take a heated yoga class even though it will be my first one?
Yes, you can begin your yoga journey with a heated class! Bring water and take child’s pose, or another calming pose, whenever needed. Don’t push yourself too hard.
What ages can do hot yoga?
Hot yoga can be practiced by age 16 and older. Yoga in general can be practiced by any age. For our lower-heat classes, we do require that youth under age 16 be accompanied by a guardian.
Can I do yoga if I'm not flexible?
Yes! You absolutely can do yoga regardless of your range of motion. It’s a falsehood, promoted by social media, that yogis must be super flexible. Yoga will help you become more flexible, increasing your range of motion.
Should I eat before I practice?
There’s no hard-and-fast rule about eating and practicing yoga; but, if you’re taking a rigorous heated class, we recommend that you don’t eat prior to the practice. (Typical recommendation is that you don’t eat two hours before a heated power class.)
Where can I park?
You can park on North Austin Street in front of the studio, in the parking lot next to the studio, across McKinney Street in the post office/City Hall parking lot, or in the public lot at Oakland and Oak streets.
